What do I think of the Characters?
Adora: I think overall she is just a middle aged woman that is afraid of having her ideal home life and reputation tarnished by the murders in the town and the fact that her own daughter is writing a story about it and bring attention to the things happening. She contributes to the story being developed by giving more insight into the minds of the people of the town and revealing more about Camille's upbringing and past life.
Camille: From what I have read, I think that Camille is a seriously disturbed alcoholic that needs to have a therapist on her speed dial at all times. Although, she has many problems she seems to be driven to succeed at her job and perform well to do her best to succeed in the industry she is in which I can admire. She contributes to the story development by driving the story forward by investigating and digging up everything she can about the murders in the town.

Week Two: Evidence
Hypothesis: Flynn uses the concept of the ethics of reporters with such statements, "On the record," to lead towards the truth of the story. 1. "Look, Richard. Talk to me. On record or off. I can't make anything out of this. I can't get objective enough."(Flynn 72) 2. "That's Wind gap, we all know each others secrets. And we all use them." (Flynn 73) 3. "Look, Camille, I'll make a deal. I'll give you a comment you can use on record, and you help me fill in these back stories."(Flynn 73) 4. "Off record, Camille, do you really think this seems like an outsider crime? You're a police reporter."(Flynn 74) 5. "Off record, they say yes.' 'Well, dammit, get them to say it on record. We need that. That's good?"(Flynn 80) 6. Current Event: The shooting on March 15 in New Zealand. This reveals the theme of truth because we will learn more about it as people are put on record to exactly what happened. 7. In the Movie Night Crawler the main character manipulated the truth of his reporting by altering reality and warping what really happened in at the crime scenes that he investigates. 8. Media corporations have been caught in recent times reporting, "Fake news," that is biased and misrepresented information to fit the beliefs of the corporation rather than objective news. 9. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9S5-7uEWaWc 10. https://www.litcharts.com/lit/sharp-objects/themes/secrets-lies-and-disguises Week Three: The Nature of Human Behavior When writing a story of mystery there are many thematic devices that an author can use to engage and entertain their audience. Some authors may call upon the devices of action and and intrigue to drive their story forward to the eventual end, but Sharp Objects written by Gillian Flynn takes a different approach to character development and thematic devices by using secrecy to push her story forward and reveal the nature of the people in the story. In Flynn's dark novel about a reporter who has to go back to her home town to investigate a string of murders that have occurred the narrators struggles to find reliable information that she can use for the story she is writing due to the fact that the town is clouded is secrecy and gossip about what is really going on in the town. This can easily be seen in the multiple interviews that Camille performers with the interviewees saying things like, "That's Wind gap, we all know each others secrets. And we all use them." (Flynn 73) In the town everyone uses the gossip and private information as currency to get what they want from each other. Camille does conform to this system multiple times saying things when interviewing such as, "Look, Richard. Talk to me. On record or off. I can't make anything out of this. I can't get objective enough."(Flynn 72) Camille can't get what she wants from the people she is interview most of the time unless she does something for them or they talk off of the record. The story is pushed forward by this secrecy by people in the story speculating, "Off record, Camille, do you really think this seems like an outsider crime? You're a police reporter." (Flynn 74) By people asking the narrator questions like this she investigates further into the murders which drives the story to keep progressing. |
